Tom Hall (debut NYC performance) is a media artist based in Brisbane, Australia. Hall’s eclectic works flourish by utilising a variety of mediums, each that reflect on his varied background and interests. With a strong focus on elements of the ‘everyday’ Hall’s practice involves considered explorations into place, space and time. Drawing inspiration from countless ‘peripheral’ spaces, Hall focuses on using multiple approaches to engage and recontextualise them to the public.

Sawako is a sound sculptor, a timeline-based artist and a signal alchemist in the urban life environment who understands the value of dynamics and the power of silence. Once through the processor named Sawako, subtle fragments in everyday life float in space vividly with a digital yet organic texture. She is interested in the soundscape and the media scape of digital era, and her activities are making bridge between public and private, virtual and actual world.

VITAL WEEKLY REVIEWS “HOURGLASS” November 17, 2009

There you go: last week I muttered about the 12″ as the forgotten format for music not being techno, here is the second release to proof me wrong. Four tracks (ain’t that classic or what?) of music recorded by Savvas Ysatis and Taylor Deupree over the course of one week in Deupree’s country studio. They continue what they started on ‘The Sleeping Morning’ (see Vital Weekly 597). Folktronic. And yes, by now, we are perhaps used to this idea this being on 12K. Deupree and Ysatis play two instrumental pieces, of warm acoustic and electric guitars, some spacious synthesizers and those psychedelic vocals on Ysatis in the other two tracks. His voice still sounds like that of Peter van Vliet from The Use Of Ashes: heldback and dreamy, and fits the music just perfectly (it would not be my cup of tea very much if this was spaced out rock music). An excellent work, once again, and while the impact of such a change isn’t as big as it was before, I must say this is yet another fine record. I am not sure if a full length is something I would want of this, but served in such a small dosis is just great. (FdW)

A couple of months back 12k gave us a preview of this album via the single release of ‘Hikari No Hana’. The version of the song that appears on this album is a different mix, side-stepping the single release’s skipping electronic beats in favour of more plainly articulated acoustic material. For the most part however, this Japanese duo thrive in an electrified soundworld, concocting such fluttering J-pop delights as ‘Life’, which combines filtered synths with worn-out drum machines for a muted, more organic feel than the kind of material Taylor Deupree released via his old Happy sub-label, or the 12k output of fellow Japanese popsters like Moskitoo. There’s an almost folksy simplicity to the arrangements and recording style here, resulting in atmospheric acoustic tracts such as the lovely ‘Heaven Knows’, while elsewhere, only the very lightest of electronic touches is detectable, as on tracks like the beat-puntuated, accordion-driven ‘Daisy’ and the Wechsel Garland-like ‘Amaoto’. ‘In Light’ must rank as one of 12k’s most resoundingly successful forays into music of this ilk, and that’s largely attributable to the comparatively diminutive role played by digital production. Here the songs succeed because there’s no unnecessarily flashy post-production interfering with their effective and simple construction. Another excellent transmission from 12k – highly recommended.
