12k has an uncanny knack for bringing out the best in its artists and Tomasz Bednarcyzk’s Let’s Make Better Mistakes Tomorrow is no exception. Not that the young Wroclaw, Poland-based musician’s previous two full-lengths, Summer Feelings and Painting Sky Together, on Room40 aren’t satisfying collections, but the third signifies a noticeable advance, due in part to the narrative arc that reveals itself over the recording’s forty-three minutes. In place of unrelated pieces, Bednarcyzk sequences the ten tracks so that the album moves from a comparative zone characterized by lightness to one darkened by murkier ambiance.

The album’s opening five tracks are like variations on a meditative ambient theme, with each floating vignette offering a slightly different take on the genre style. In “While,” blurry guitar tones shimmer amidst the lulling flow of static hiss and soft percussive noise, while an outdoors field recording by Sawako lends the otherwise ethereal “Shimokita” an expansive and earthy dimension. In the melancholic “Drawing,” a sonar-like plink punctuates a dense mass of glassy tones and crackling textures, and a deep bass pulse anchors a slow-motion blizzard of noise textures in the even more melancholic “Autumn.” One-time Triosk member Adrian Klumpes catalyzes the album’s shift in direction by adding elegant piano cascades to the field recordings of children and percussive detritus loudly crackling through “The Sketch.” Bednarcyzk shrouds the subsequent pieces in denser textural fields that make them feel less carefree and free-floating. Ever-advancing storm clouds gradually smother the penultimate setting “Little Spring” before “Night” closes the album in a retiring mood with softly glimmering bass tones breathing against a bed of crackle. Ending the album with such a twilight gesture helps deepen the album with a gravitas it would otherwise lack. Mention must also be made of 12k’s beautiful presentation of the material, with the seaside photography by Joanna Kurkowska a lovely complement to Bednarcyzk’s music.

15 QUESTIONS WITH PILLOWDIVER July 28, 2009

Pillowdiver_15_Questions_Interview_170x170

Pillowdiver’s René Margraff is the latest to succumb to Tokafi’s “15 Questions.” you can read the full article here.

http://www.tokafi.com/15questions/15-questions-pillowdiver/

“I guess the tracks that I released on ‘sleeping pills’ are more structured than other releases within this field of music”, René Margraff says, “this is something that I am aware of and that I cannot change too easily.” Then again – why should he? Infusing a genre relyingforemost on timbre and harmony with a healthy dose of compositional zest and subtle thematic development is certainly what continues to make his releases stand out. After mainly working under the Ckid moniker since the beginning of the new decade and building a sizable discography mostly through renowned netlabels, Margraff is now back with new project called Pillowdiver, dealing with brittle and intimate soundscapes. Even though the same could have been said about Ckid, not everything has remained the same. While his former solo outfit combined dense, dreamy atmospheres with metalically ringing percussion and hushed vocals, Pillowdiver zooms in on the nanostructures of these textures, replacing rhythm with a field of interconnected field recordings bound by a mysterious magnetism: Minimal melodies rise up from a well of brooding tranquility, slowly expand along the shoreline of nocturnal drones and then gradually lapse back into silence. What has remained, however, despite the notable absence of Margraff’s voice, is the songwriting character of these tracks, whose melancholic lyricism needs no words to tell a story. Which is why, even though it doesn’t move mountains, “Sleeping Pills” has turned out a work which appears set to last a lot longer than several of its counterparts from the scene which are often all too closely focused on beauty for beauty’s sake. “I cannot improvise alone with myself, I guess I would need input from other people to change”, Margraff notes in our interview. While creative input may be a good thing most of the times, let’s just say that – purely from an artistic point of view – we wouldn’t mind if he stayed alone in his studio for the next Pillowdiver full-length.
